Google tests ads in AI Mode for people who connect Gmail, Calendar and Photos
What changed
Google confirmed to Search Engine Land that it's testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence, which reverses its earlier promise that this experience would stay ad-free. Google's Search Help page now says ads won't be based directly on the Gmail inbox or Photos library, but that "summaries, excerpts and inferences" from connected apps "may be used to show you ads." Sensitive categories are excluded, and advertisers get no access to the connected data. Google hasn't announced any new targeting controls or reporting for advertisers.
What to do
Nothing to switch on. If you run Search, PMax or AI Max on broad match, expect some AI Mode impressions to be matched on personal context rather than the query alone, so watch search terms and AI Mode reporting for unexpected matches.
