From Nov 20, Meta's updated terms make you solely responsible for what its AI features create or change in your ads
What changed
Meta's preview of the updated Self-Serve Ad Terms, effective November 20, 2026, adds an AI features clause. It says Meta may use AI, machine learning and generative AI features to "optimize, enhance or create Ad Creative", that these features "may make mistakes", and that "You are solely responsible for and assume any and all risks associated with such AI features and any resulting Ad Creative". A second line makes you solely responsible for your ad creative, targeting and placements "even when you use our automated features to assist with the formatting, generation, or selection" of it. You also may not remove AI watermarks or content-authenticating metadata. The updated Meta Commercial Terms (same date) have a matching "AI Features" section that covers all business content, not just ads. The update folds the separate Ad Creative Generative AI Terms into these terms. Adweek and PPC Land report agencies finding Advantage+ adding sitelinks, translations and AI images to ads they did not opt in, and one agency pulling live ads; Meta told Adweek each feature can be turned off in Ads Manager. Early reports gave Oct 30, the original date; Meta has since moved it to Nov 20.
What to do
Before Nov 20, and before Black Friday creative goes live, open each active ad's Advantage+ creative enhancements and turn off the ones you don't want (check the collapsed sections too). Re-check after any account update notice. Spot-check what actually served using ad previews. If you are an agency, agree in writing with clients who approves AI-made changes, since the terms put the risk on the advertiser.
