Google Tag Manager can now send data straight to GA4 and Google Ads without gtag.js, through an opt-in container upgrade

What changed

Google's Tag Manager release notes for October 12, 2026 add an "Optimize your Tag Manager container" flow. Optimized containers send data directly to Google destinations (GA4, Google Ads, Floodlight, Merchant Center) instead of loading extra gtag.js. Google tag settings move into a new Settings tab, and Google tags become destination tags. Google says nothing changes automatically: you start the flow from a banner and preview the changes in a workspace before you publish. Optimizing links the container to your Google destination accounts automatically and grants "Read" access by default. A separate Oct 8 release note says gtm.js containers now initialize on load regardless of gtag('config') commands, and those commands show up in the dataLayer as gtag.config events. That can make tags with wildcard custom event triggers fire.

What to do

Don't click through the banner on a live container. Export the current version, run the optimization in a fresh workspace, then check in Preview mode that each Google destination fires once per page, that consent behavior is unchanged, and that conversions still record. Review who gets Read access before you publish. Separately, check for custom event triggers with wildcard or regex matches that could now fire on gtag.config events.
