Shopify now checks barcodes against the GS1 registry and suggests marking real ones as GTINs
What changed
Shopify's admin now looks up barcodes in the GS1 registry, the body that issues GTINs, which sales channels such as Google use to match listings to the right product. A new barcode that looks like a GTIN and is registered with GS1 gets marked as a GTIN automatically. Saved barcodes set to Custom that look like GTINs get a suggestion you can accept or dismiss, one at a time or all at once in the products and inventory bulk editors. If GS1 has the barcode registered to a different vendor or product name, Shopify shows the GS1 record on hover, for information only. Shopify never changes a saved barcode unless you accept the suggestion.
What to do
Before Black Friday, open the products bulk editor and review the GTIN suggestions, then accept the ones that are your real GS1 codes so Google and other channels get correct product identifiers. Look closely at any barcode where GS1's vendor or product name doesn't match yours; it may be a supplier's code or a typo.
